Today, recommender systems have played an increasingly important role in shaping our experiences of digital environments and social interactions. However, as recommender systems become ubiquitous in our society, recent years have also witnessed significant fairness concerns for recommender systems. Specifically, studies have shown that recommender systems may inherit or even amplify biases from historical data, and as a result, provide unfair recommendations. To address fairness risks in recommender systems, most of the previous approaches to date are focused on modifying either the existing training data samples or the deployed recommender algorithms, but unfortunately with limited degrees of success. In this paper, we propose a new approach called fair recommendation with optimized antidote data (FairRoad), which aims to improve the fairness performances of recommender systems through the construction of a small and carefully crafted antidote dataset. Toward this end, we formulate our antidote data generation task as a mathematical optimization problem, which minimizes the unfairness of the targeted recommender systems while not disrupting the deployed recommendation algorithms. Extensive experiments show that our proposed antidote data generation algorithm significantly improve the fairness of recommender systems with a small amounts of antidote data.

Neural Radiance Fields (NeRF) methods have proved effective as compact, high-quality and versatile representations for 3D scenes, and enable downstream tasks such as editing, retrieval, navigation, etc. Various neural architectures are vying for the core structure of NeRF, including the plain Multi-Layer Perceptron (MLP), sparse tensors, low-rank tensors, hashtables and their compositions. Each of these representations has its particular set of trade-offs. For example, the hashtable-based representations admit faster training and rendering but their lack of clear geometric meaning hampers downstream tasks like spatial-relation-aware editing. In this paper, we propose Progressive Volume Distillation (PVD), a systematic distillation method that allows any-to-any conversions between different architectures, including MLP, sparse or low-rank tensors, hashtables and their compositions. PVD consequently empowers downstream applications to optimally adapt the neural representations for the task at hand in a post hoc fashion. The conversions are fast, as distillation is progressively performed on different levels of volume representations, from shallower to deeper. We also employ special treatment of density to deal with its specific numerical instability problem. Empirical evidence is presented to validate our method on the NeRF-Synthetic, LLFF and TanksAndTemples datasets. For example, with PVD, an MLP-based NeRF model can be distilled from a hashtable-based Instant-NGP model at a 10X~20X faster speed than being trained the original NeRF from scratch, while achieving a superior level of synthesis quality. The performance of a camera network monitoring a set of targets depends crucially on the configuration of the cameras. In this paper, we investigate the reconfiguration strategy for the parameterized camera network model, with which the sensing qualities of the multiple targets can be optimized globally and simultaneously. We first propose to use the number of pixels occupied by a unit-length object in image as a metric of the sensing quality of the object, which is determined by the parameters of the camera, such as intrinsic, extrinsic, and distortional coefficients. Then, we form a single quantity that measures the sensing quality of the targets by the camera network. This quantity further serves as the objective function of our optimization problem to obtain the optimal camera configuration. We verify the effectiveness of our approach through extensive simulations and experiments, and the results reveal its improved performance on the AprilTag detection tasks. We present SLATE, a sequence labeling approach for extracting tasks from free-form content such as digitally handwritten (or "inked") notes on a virtual whiteboard. Our approach allows us to create a single, low-latency model to simultaneously perform sentence segmentation and classification of these sentences into task/non-task sentences. SLATE greatly outperforms a baseline two-model (sentence segmentation followed by classification model) approach, achieving a task F1 score of 84.4\%, a sentence segmentation (boundary similarity) score of 88.4% and three times lower latency compared to the baseline. Furthermore, we provide insights into tackling challenges of performing NLP on the inking domain. We release both our code and dataset for this novel task.

The task of Compositional Zero-Shot Learning (CZSL) is to recognize images of novel state-object compositions that are absent during the training stage. Previous methods of learning compositional embedding have shown effectiveness in closed-world CZSL. However, in Open-World CZSL (OW-CZSL), their performance tends to degrade significantly due to the large cardinality of possible compositions. Some recent works separately predict simple primitives (i.e., states and objects) to reduce cardinality. However, they consider simple primitives as independent probability distributions, ignoring the heavy dependence between states, objects, and compositions. In this paper, we model the dependence of compositions via feasibility and contextuality. Feasibility-dependence refers to the unequal feasibility relations between simple primitives, e.g., \textit{hairy} is more feasible with \textit{cat} than with \textit{building} in the real world. Contextuality-dependence represents the contextual variance in images, e.g., \textit{cat} shows diverse appearances under the state of \textit{dry} and \textit{wet}. We design Semantic Attention (SA) and generative Knowledge Disentanglement (KD) to learn the dependence of feasibility and contextuality, respectively. SA captures semantics in compositions to alleviate impossible predictions, driven by the visual similarity between simple primitives. KD disentangles images into unbiased feature representations, easing contextual bias in predictions. Moreover, we complement the current compositional probability model with feasibility and contextuality in a compatible format. Finally, we conduct comprehensive experiments to analyze and validate the superior or competitive performance of our model, Semantic Attention and knowledge Disentanglement guided Simple Primitives (SAD-SP), on three widely-used benchmark OW-CZSL datasets.
